84bmw03 Group 64 Heating and Air Conditioning Bulletin Number 64 01 84 (810) Page 1 of 2 Montvale, NJ April, 1984 Technical Dept. Subject: AIR CONDITIONING MALFUNCTIONS Model: 1978 - 1983 733i A faulty evaporator temperature switch can cause one of the following complaints: 1) "Air conditioning doesn't cool" (switch fails to supply electrical current to the air conditioning compressor). 2) "Air conditioning evaporator ices up; vapor mist out of air outlet vents" (switch does not interrupt electrical current to the compressor clutch). The evaporator temperature switch is located on the support stand for the blower motor. Access to the switch is gained by removal of the fresh air intake cowl (at the base of the windshield). The switch should be electrically "closed" at evaporator temperatures above 42~F. The switch should be electrically "open" at evaporator temperatures below 35~F. Should either of the above complaints be caused by a faulty evaporator temperatures switch, both of the corrective measures described on page 2 should be performed. The contact material of the evaporator temperature switch has been changed for protection against evaporator icing. The modified switch is identified by a dot of red or green paint on the bracket mounting bolt. 1.
